The All-American Dream
I'm sure you've all heard this expression before. But what does it really mean anyway?!Is it that all Americans have one dream or is it that they dream one day of an entirely American race?I write about this expression because a fairly elderly slightly senile relative(who has lived in the US of A for most of his life) told my brother "Son,you are living the all American dream."Are they trying to say that all Americans dream of being holed up in a laboratory for 14 hours a day living on minimum wage?!

So I wonder what this expression truly means.I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be the second option considering the United States of America has a nasty habit of poking their obscenely large noses into everyone else's business.

Having said that,we don't exactly ignore the affairs of the yanks. We know that Barrack Obama is the democratic presidential candidate and John McCain is his republican counterpart. At the same time we also know that Obama's wife is called Michelle, Dick Cheney shot an old man instead of a deer and Mike Huckabee played the electric guitar in a gospel band. Although this information has not been heard by all, it is fairly widely known.

And so I pose a question to the comm-e class. Do we give the Americans more importance than necessary or is it in fact necessary to give them this much importance?

P.S-Front page news a couple of days ago:American actress Angelina Jolie gives birth to twins.Yes,FRONT PAGE.

    Hey Nikki!
I believe the American dream has something to do with having a paid job, dignity of labor, one's own house, and um..a car. But I'm no authority on that, of course :p

On a more serious note (there always is one!) I believe it has to do with freedom and fundamental rights, with it's roots going all the way back to that whole taxation without representation thingy.

Yes, we really do give all things (North) American too much importance, but we do that with Bollywood and cricket too.

    Everyone knows that:
    1. 'Desis' still have an inferiority complex and indulge in gora worship.
    2. To emulate all things white is the ticket to coolness.
    3. India has corruption, pollution and cows, ergo, where's my passport, ma?

But the whole situation is pretty darn logical when you come to it: I'm sure we're all sick of hearing about our nation's glory in the days of yore, ayurveda, Mahatma Gandhi and how we've got some of the richest blokes in the world.

Our education system is a stagnant mess, our political scene is way too full of intrigues and counter-intrigues to be comprehended and originality got botoxed into sellability.

Honestly, there are too many problems that can't be ignored and most of us are too lazy to deal with them. So it makes perfect sense to pack your bags and run, right? Or at least have beautiful, living demi-gods to fan-worship in times when you can take idols of gods and replace them monthly without having to worry about the trash-canned deity's wrath?

OK this turned into a rant. Scusi me :$

Finally, and more importantly, good post!! :D

Thank you for the comment commentaholic!(the longer the better!:P)

I agree with what your saying about the "Desis" wanting to run off to the land of the free to avoid dealing with issues in our own country and I think its a very interesting topic.

But what I'm trying to say is that although the desis(I like this word:P) are fanatically obsessed with bollywood and cricket, a large majority of them are still aware of American news, politics, hollywood gossip etc.We not only pay less attention to the news of other countries but also of our own country.I'm not really sure what I'm getting at.This is just an observation.:)

But thanks for clearing up the "All-American Dream" question Ajooni!:)
